uMhlanga or Ballito? Which coastal paradise will be your choice this Easter?

Category Self Catering Holiday Rentals

As chocolate eggs and hot-cross buns line the supermarket shelves, the much-awaited Easter long-weekend is drawing closer. It is one of the most popular occasions on the SA calendar as it brings families together and is also usually a very busy time for the Chas Everitt International holiday rental division in KZN.

That's the word from Karen von Wielligh and Nicolas Dekker, who are the holiday rental managers for Ballito and uMhlanga respectively.

Easter in Ballito

"This year, the Easter weekend is from 19 April (Good Friday) to 22 April (Family Day) and most self-catering holiday apartments in Ballito are already fully booked for these dates," says Von Wielligh.

"In fact, many repeat clients made their bookings last year, while those new to the area usually start booking from January in order to secure the best holiday apartments that are spacious and boast uninterrupted sea-views.

"During this time, Ballito not only attracts local tourists from KwaZulu-Natal but also those from inland provinces such as the Free State, Northern Cape, Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga."

She goes on to explain that secure estates and complexes are in high-demand among families who require accommodation that is secure, within walking distance of the beach and offers on-site entertainment features such as braai areas, gardens and pools.

"And the best part is that even during Easter, accommodation prices are affordable, starting from approximately R1500/night for a 1,5 bedroom unit to R3500/night for three bedrooms.

Meanwhile, says Von Wielligh, there is also high demand for the forthcoming school holidays, which runs from 15 March to 2 April.

"We are already 70% booked for this period - and also getting bookings for the other long weekends between 19 April and 4 May."

Easter in uMhlanga

For Dekker and the rest of the holiday rentals staff in uMhlanga, Easter is likened to a mini-December.

"We also receive an influx of inland tourists, particularly families, and most of our holiday accommodation options are also fully booked for the Easter weekend.

He says many bookings take place well in advance, starting from December or January, while the company also receives plenty of last-minute inquiries which they try their best to fulfill where possible.

Dekker notes that the Easter weekend attracts families to specific holiday apartment complexes that cater for children and boast excellent leisure features.

"In particular, the Breakers Resort and The Oysters of uMhlanga have become the two most beloved options among families, both offering uninterrupted sea-views, well-manicured gardens and self-catering facilities."

He says that prices can range anywhere from R1800/night for a studio apartment in the Breakers Resort up to R7700/night for a luxury four bedroom apartment in the Oysters.

"uMhlanga is an easily accessible destination by air or road - and an added bonus is the toasty weather during Easter which lends itself to an enjoyable and relaxing beach experience.

"Even more, there are many other attractions in the area to visit including the uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve, Gateway shopping centre and the KZN Sharks Board."

Easter 2019 is set to attract a bevy of tourists to the glistening shores of Ballito and uMhlanga. Families, couples and just about anyone else can enjoy world-class accommodation set amid unspoiled nature, blue flag beaches and internationally renowned attractions.
