uMhlanga and Ballito get festive
Category Holiday Rentals
It's that time of the year again when all roads lead to KZN's North Coast as local and international tourists head for their December holiday break in one of the area's many resort towns, including uMhlanga, Westbrook, Ballito, Chaka's Rock, Salt Rock, Sheffield Beach, uMhlali, Tinley Manor and Shakaskraal.
The two most popular holiday towns among tourists are uMhlanga and Ballito as these have the most developed tourism facilities and offer a wide range of accommodation options, from self-catering holiday apartments to hotels, guesthouses, bed-and-breakfast establishments and even backpackers' hostels.
A word of caution
By November, accommodation options are usually almost fully booked, because tourists start planning their year-end holiday from June onwards. Last-minute bookings can be made but, Nicolas Dekker, the Chas Everitt International holiday rentals manager for uMhlanga, cautions that tourists need to be extra vigilant when handling such arrangements.
"If you are planning a last-minute holiday in either town, it is important to be aware of the potential scammers who prey on those who are rushing or desperate to find accommodation," he says.
"There have been many cases of tourists booking and paying deposits for bogus accommodation created by scammers who post eye-catching photos of properties that are supposedly to let all over social media platforms. It is easy to get duped as the properties they feature are typically very attractive and offered at very reasonable prices."
The best way to prevent this scenario, he says, is to first check that the property is listed with the local tourism office.
"This is actually a legal requirement for every holiday property in the eThekwini Municipality, which includes uMhlanga. However, it is unfortunately not a legal requirement in Ballito, which falls into the KwaDukuza Municipality."
Dekker adds: "Since last-minute bookings are always rushed, the best option is to book through a trusted agency like Chas Everitt International. Dealing with our holiday rentals department means you can be sure that the properties listed are genuinely to let and that all monies are protected by a trust account."
Nothing beats the beach
Once all the necessary precautions have been taken, it is time to enjoy uMhlanga and Ballito to the fullest. These two towns have some of the best beaches in SA and are close to a string of other beaches along the North Coast. Most of these are ideal for swimming and make for amazing sunlit backdrops during afternoon strolls. And for those looking for a bit more adrenalin, exhilarating watersports such as surfing, kite surfing and deep-sea diving will get your heart pumping.
Must-see beaches are:
Throughout the year, there is plenty to do in uMhlanga, but this is amplified when December arrives. The fun begins with events such as Carols Under the Stars which takes place in uMhlanga Rocks, the Christmas Wonder Market in Chris Saunders Park, and Cocktails & Christmas at the Oyster Box where a four-course dinner is paired with Christmas themed cocktails.
Ballito is also a hive of activity during the year with popular attractions such as The Litchi Orchard, Sugar Rush Park and Flag Animal Farm. During December, the town also embraces the festive season through events such as the Ballito NYE Street Party, the Ladies' Christmas Golf Day at the Simbithi Country Club, and a number of events in Fairmont Zimbali Resort including Christmas lunch and supper, and the Havana Nights NYE Party Countdown.
