Ballito at a glance

One of the most desirable holiday locations in South Africa is undoubtedly Ballito, due to its vast enchanting beaches, luxury accommodation and a host of attractions and amenities. The coastal town, commonly referred to as the Dolphin Coast, lies in KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast and is 40 km’s away from Durban and 29.4 km’s from the King Shaka International Airport.

The Beaches of Ballito

The main reason for the town’s holiday allure is its eight beaches that have continuously attracted local holidaymakers and international tourists for several decades, even during eras when the area was largely undeveloped.

Top 8 beaches:

•    Salt Rock Beach
•    Chakas Rock
•    Sheffield Beach & Christmas Bay
•    Willard Beach
•    Thompson Bay Beach
•    Clarke Bay
•    Salmon Bay
•    Zimbali Beach

Like every great success story, early beginnings are modest and somewhat underwhelming, and in the case of Ballito, this rings entirely true. The town was established back in 1954, under the initial private ownership by the Glen Anil Development Corporation. By this time, Ballito stretched out along an area known as Compensation Beach, which encompassed Willard Beach, Clark Bay, Salmon Bay and Port Zimbali. Like most north coast suburbs, Ballito initially was a sugarcane farm. However, almost immediately, investors began realising it was an ideal holiday destination, and this gave rise to a wealth of hotels, lodges and chalets. Such a culture of leisure continued to grow exponentially, until the town once defined by its sugarcane plantations, transformed into the internationally recognised holiday destination we know and love today.

This list is due to grow as the coastal town is currently experiencing a burgeoning tourism market that is expected to see the establishment of many new self-catering holiday homes available on Chas Everitt Holiday Rentals.

Directly in line with booming tourism, the residential market is also growing quite remarkably as a wealth of new residential developments take hold. Currently, the most famous property type in the area is secure and gated estates, with the most renowned being Zimbali and Simbithi Eco Estate. The rising residential market will have a knock-on effect on the number of holiday homes available as more homeowners are choosing to invest in property strictly for holiday-letting purposes owing to the lucrative tourism market.
