THOUSANDS EXPECTED FOR UN CONFERENCE ON CLIMATE, WRITES EDWARD WEST DURBAN’S Inkhosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre (ICC) and adjacent exhibition centre are abuzz with activity as the city prepares to host the United Nations’ 17th Conference of the Parties (COP-17) climate change negotiations, which start next week.By Friday, 160000 hotel bednights had already been sold in the city. Accommodation is fully booked for the duration of the event, which continues until December 9. According to mayor James Nxumalo, "we are in the process of meeting all the responsibilities expected of us as the host city and are now getting ready to stand back, open our arms and welcome the world to Durban". Much of the area around the ICC has been a construction site in recent weeks as marquees and exhibition venues are put in place .COP-17 may bring 15000 accredited delegates and 5000 interested parties to the city, but these are estimates . Figures of about 40000 have been suggested. More than 6000 nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) and 2000 media members are expected. For Durban, COP-17 is bigger than the Soccer World Cup because while the number of visitors may turn out to be the same — 25000 — World Cup visitors usually went to other cities after the games in Durban. COP-17 delegates will be in the city for up to two weeks. Outgoing city manager Michael Sutcliffe says Durban has set aside R50m to pay for the COP-17 preparations and while "budgets are tight", spending at this stage is within budget .
