SPECIAL CLIMATE CHANGE PROGRAMME FOR LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY The Durban Business Day, organized by the Durban Chamber in association with several other organizations, promises a very informative programme on the climate change and environment challenges facing business. The date is 30th November and the venue is the Jewish Centre in KE Masinga Road. The programme will include a presentation on the Challenge of Sustainability by Peter Willis, who is head of the Cambridge Programme for Sustainability Leadership (CPSL) which has itself arranged a fortnight-long programme for the benefit of COP17 visitors. Graham Terry of SAICA will speak about Integrated Reporting, a mode of reporting in the business sector which has international acceptability. There will be a description by Dr Andrew Venter of the CEBA project (Community Ecosystem Based Adaptation), a joint initiative of the eThekwini Municipality and the Wildlands Conservation Trust which seeks to uplift local communities and create ‘green’ jobs. Professor Faizal Bux will speak about sustainable utilization of waste water, while several companies, including Woolworths, Tetra Pak and General Electric will present their responses and strategies relating to their contributions to the green economy. The last topic on the programme will be the Dube Aerotropolis which promises to be a green city of the future. The Centre will also accommodate a number of exhibits mounted by local businesses that have ‘green’ products or services to offer. This is another way in which the Chamber has provided opportunities for its members and believes that these exhibits will be of wide interest. The Durban Business Day will be just one aspect of a programme developed by the CPSL and the Wildlands Trust which will make the Jewish Centre a hive of activity for the duration of COP17.The Oasis, as it has been named, will offer relaxation and a good deal of intellectual stimulation around the challenges of sustainability.Details of the programme may be found on the CPSL website (http://www.cpsl.cam.ac.uk/Network/CPSL-at-COP17.aspx).Registration ahead of time is required, but many of these events are open to business and other interested people in Durban. There is no charge for attending the Durban Business Day, but booking is essential – Sareeka Brijlal at brijlals@durbanchamber.co.za or 0313351036.
