Morningside offers some classic examples of large Edwardian and Victorian style homes with tin roofs and wide verandas, including the State President’s residence when at home, large sprawling parks like those of Mitchell Park and Jameson Park, and trendy streets on which a distinctly cosmopolitan atmosphere has attracted a vibey night life to its restaurants, pubs and bistros, particularly around Florida Road.

Morningside, which borders Berea on one side, and the Umgeni River on the other, ranks as one of Durban’s three most popular suburbs - the other two being the Berea and Bulwer, for the very reason that one can get such good value for money here. The established tree-lined streets and accessibility to the centre of Durban and all of her attractions make it even more appealing.

The Durban July, a national horse racing event that is held at Greyville Racecourse, in particular acts as a draw card to the area and the Moses Mabhida Stadium means that suburbs in and around the King’s Park area, like lower Morningside, are becoming ideal places to stay.

 

Durban Beachwood Golf Course.

The Durban Country Club Beachwood Course is part of Durban Country Club lying about 2 km north of Durban Country Club. Although it borders the Indian Ocean, Beachwood does not quite have the accentuated undulating fairways so common to Links courses, especially those of the Country Club Course.

Durban Country Club

Durban Country Club Golf Course, 101 Walter Gilbert Road, Durban, KwaZulu Natal / The Durban Country Club boasts 2 championship course; namely the Durban Country Club course and the Durban Country Club Beachwood Course Opened in 1922, the Durban Country Club is said to be one of the best golf courses in South Africa and is acknowledged to have the best third hole in the world, has hosted the SA Open championships 14 times. With its dense bush, indigenous trees and undulating fairways it is hard to believe that this spectacular championship course is actually situated in the centre of Durban.

Situated along the shores of the Indian Ocean, this semi-links course has been carved into the dunes. The course is both scenic and demanding and to score well you have to play well. Strong onshore winds that blow through the valley don’t help.

Greyille Race Course

Say the suburb name ‘Greyville’ to the average Durbanite, and you will discover it is virtually synonymous with the Durban July and Durban’s first and longest running sports venue - the Greyville Racecourse. Moses Mabhida Stadium

Located in KwaZulu Natal in the beautiful City of Durban, Moses Mabhida Stadium is named after a hero of the working class. The Moses Mabhida Stadium is located adjacent the ABSA Stadium in the Kings Park Sporting Precinct - a site located in Stamford Hill, is a world class multi-purpose stadium set to make possible successful history in the making of the 2010 Fifa World Cup.

To make way for this prestigious contribution Kings Park Stadium was demolished in late 2006 to develop a new stadium complex set to comprise of an adjoining indoor arena, sporting museum, sport institute and a new transmodal transportation station in preparations ahead of the world showpiece. The catering capacity is set to comprise of 70 000 spectator seats.

Mitchell Park & Jameson Park

Mature trees shade innocent dreams on a leisurely laze at Mitchell Park. The lawn lends itself to family picnics and solo siestas with the occasional musical accompaniment from the band rotunda.

Flowerbeds and zoo animals share the same generous portion of well manicured Africa. Additional animals were added to this once unprofitable Ostrich farm (1910) resulting in today's pleasant collection of aviaries and menageries. Tropical fish, exotic birds, reptiles and small animals happily co-exist with colourful petals and botanical displays. The children's playground hosts many giggles and cartwheels but is also friendly to physically challenged children.

The Blue Zoo Restaurant refreshes park visitors and when the breeze brushes in the right direction one can smell the velvet nectar from the adjacent Jameson Park. Jameson Park once a pineapple plantation is now the rose haven of Durban, displaying 600 rose bushes (200 species) despite local subtropical climatic conditions.
